This work depicts Frida Kahlo, the radical Mexican artist remembered for her searing self-portraits and celebration of her identity as mestizaje (mixed European and Mexican). One of the first women to use fashion to broadcast a feminist message of independence, work and equality, she believed in the idea of jolie laide, or beautiful ugly, highlighting her flaws to assert the allure of imperfection, while touching on taboo female issues such as abortion, miscarriage, birth, breastfeeding in her paintings.
