This work depicts Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife, portrayed variously throughout history as a tragic heroine, wicked woman or feminist icon. A devout Protestant, she was key in Henry VIII breaking with the Catholic Church and starting the Church of England after she refused to become his mistress and demanded she became Queen of England. She was executed three years later, on trumped-up charges of adultery. More likely, she demanded to be treated like a man in a patriarchal world.
